~ Colorado Springs, CO - City officials have announced that preliminary work has begun to repair North Cheyenne Canyon Road after a recent washout forced the closure of both that road and Gold Camp Road in North Cheyenne Cañon. The joint effort between the City of Colorado Springs and Colorado Springs Utilities will focus on stabilizing the creek channel before road repairs can take place. However, ongoing weather conditions may impact the timeline for these repairs.
City Engineer Gayle Sturdivant stated that crews are working diligently to assess the damage and determine a reopening timeline, which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. "We understand the importance of this road for both residents and recreational users," Sturdivant said. "Our top priority is to reopen the road in a safe manner."

The washout occurred on June 4th after heavy rainfall caused an entire lane of North Cheyenne Canyon Road to collapse about 1.5 miles from the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center. As a result, Gold Camp Road remains closed to the public but is accessible for residents who live in the area. This closure not only ensures their safety but also helps alleviate congestion on the narrow and steep road.
For recreational users accessing North Cheyenne Cañon, it is crucial to park only in designated areas or risk being ticketed and towed. City officials urge everyone to respect all signed closures and barricades for their own safety as well as for those working on repairing the road.
The reopening of North Cheyenne Canyon Road is eagerly awaited by both residents and visitors who rely on it for transportation and recreation purposes. The city officials assure that they are doing everything possible to expedite the repairs while prioritizing safety for all involved.
