DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In a historic move, President Biden issued a formal apology on behalf of the Federal Government for its role in Indian Boarding Schools across the United States. Governor Jared Polis and Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera of Colorado released a statement in response to this acknowledgement.
"Our administration has been dedicated to creating a Colorado For All, where everyone can thrive," said Governor Polis and Lt. Governor Primavera. "As the federal government takes responsibility for this dark part of our history, we stand with our Tribal and American Indian/Alaska Native community partners and remain committed to seeking opportunities for education and healing."
The Polis-Primavera administration has taken concrete steps towards addressing the impact of Indian Boarding Schools. They have passed two bills - HB22-1327 Native American Boarding Schools and HB24-1444 Federal Indian Boarding Schools Research Program - which aim to provide support and resources for survivors and their communities. Additionally, Governor Polis has allocated $1 million in his 2024-2025 budget for History Colorado to continue consultations with American Indian/Alaska Native communities within the state.

The National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition is also working towards creating safe spaces for survivors and Indigenous peoples through traditional practices and values. They offer additional support through self-care resources available on their website.
Acknowledging the tragic mistakes of the past is an important step towards building a more inclusive future where everyone can thrive regardless of their background or tribal affiliation. The Polis-Primavera administration's efforts demonstrate their commitment to creating a better tomorrow for all Coloradans.
