~ As National Women's History Month kicks off in March, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM) is joining organizations across the country in honoring the vital role of women in American history. The museum, known for its dedication to preserving and sharing local stories, is showcasing the contributions of women through various exhibits and events.
One of the featured exhibits at CSPM is "50% of the Story: Women Expressing Creativity," which invites visitors to explore how women have always used art and creativity to tell their stories throughout history. Despite their significant contributions, women's work in these fields has often gone unrecognized.
Another exhibit, "COS@150: Exploring Colorado Springs' Story Through Objects," highlights the stories of numerous local women such as Maude McFerran Price, Lulu Stroud Pollard, Julie Penrose, Fannie Mae Duncan, Judy Noyes, Bee Vradenburg, "Mama" Susie Perkins, and members of the Colorado Springs Civic League.
In addition to these exhibits, CSPM also features a community-based exhibit called "Una Familia Grande: The Conejos Neighborhood Project." This exhibit uses artifacts, photographs, and personal stories from former residents Ruth Melena, Josie Ontiveros, and Josie Ornelas to shed light on the once vibrant neighborhood southwest of downtown.

Another exhibit titled "Any Place That is North and West: African Americans in Colorado Springs" tells the story of Black residents who migrated to Colorado Springs following the Great Migration. It showcases their contributions to shaping the city and features personal stories from individuals such as Gretchen McRae, the Stroud Family, Vera Gang Scott, and Joyce Gilmer.
The life and work of renowned 19th-century American author Helen Hunt Jackson is also highlighted at CSPM through an exhibit called "A Home of One's Own: The Life of Helen Hunt Jackson." This exhibit includes photographs, artifacts, documents, and even three original rooms from Jackson's house in Colorado Springs.
CSPM also offers a permanent gallery digital interface and mobile device tour called "The Story of Us: The Pikes Peak Region A-Z." This interactive exhibit encourages visitors to connect stories through their physical location and features stories of women such as Julia Archibald Holmes, the talented women of Sankofa, the Vallejo Family, and Elvira.
To celebrate Women's History Month 2025, CSPM is inviting the public to engage with these community stories through their exhibit galleries, public programs, and social media posts. Interested individuals can visit the museum's website for more information.

In addition to these exhibits, CSPM is also hosting several events throughout the month. On March 8th, there will be a special event featuring artists from the "50% of the Story" exhibit. Registration is required for this event on the museum's website. On March 15th, there will be a workshop facilitated by artist Sophia Rose for those interested in exploring their own creativity. Limited space is available and registration can be done on the museum's donation page. Finally, on March 20th, there will be a free admission event featuring jazz music with drink tickets available for purchase.
