DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In response to the ongoing Ferris Fire in Dolores and Montezuma Counties, Governor Polis has declared a disaster emergency today. The fire has already burned an estimated 57,356 acres and is currently 19% contained.
The Governor's verbal declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety to take charge of all response, recovery, and mitigation efforts for the Ferris Fire. This includes support from the Department's Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC).
The State will be providing resources such as engines, handcrews, aviation resources, incident management personnel, and overhead support to assist in managing the fire and containing its spread. DFPC will also be offering administrative and financial oversight as well as intelligence products such as imaging, mapping, and fire behavior modeling.

DHSEM is working closely with local emergency managers in Dolores and Montezuma Counties by providing on-site area field managers at the emergency operations center. Additionally, this declaration authorizes the National Guard to assist in response efforts and makes it easier for out-of-state licensed emergency medical providers to join in on fire response efforts.
Governor Polis urges residents in affected areas to stay informed about evacuation orders and follow all safety precautions. The State is committed to working together with local agencies to ensure a swift response to this disaster.
