SOUTHERN COLORADO ~ Southern Colorado welcomed a series of new laws today as Governor Jared Polis made his way through the region, signing legislation aimed at supporting students, promoting renewable energy, protecting wildlife, and improving access to healthcare.

The day began in Colorado Springs where Governor Polis signed SB25-197 - Tony Grampsas Youth Services Program. This bill, sponsored by Senator Exum and Representative Bacon, aims to provide resources and activities for young people outside of school. In a statement, Governor Polis emphasized the importance of investing in the state's youth for the future.

At Colorado College, known for its closed loop geothermal system, Governor Polis signed HB25-1165 - Geologic Storage Enterprise & Geothermal Resources. This law, sponsored by Representatives Paschal and Soper and Senators Simpson and Kipp, aims to strengthen geothermal potential in the state and support access to low-cost energy options. Governor Polis praised Colorado's leadership in geothermal energy and expressed his belief that this new law will continue moving the state in the right direction.

Governor Polis also signed HB25-1023 - Local Government Review of Fencing Projects at Colorado College. This law, sponsored by Representatives Martinez and Bacon and Senators Gonzales and Simpson, ensures that local governments have a say in approving fences to prevent negative impacts on land access for wildlife as well as the health of the land and community.

During his visit to Southern Colorado, Governor Polis also took time to speak with local farmers who are feeling the effects of President Trump's tariffs. Specifically discussing impacts on beef and potato exports - two of Colorado's top agricultural products - Governor Polis urged President Trump to reconsider these policies that are already hurting farmers across the country.

As a strong supporter of Colorado's agricultural industry, Governor Polis has taken steps to open up new markets for farmers around the world. For example, he helped secure exports into Mexico for potato growers. However, the Trump tariffs could threaten the livelihoods of Colorado farmers if Mexico imposes retaliatory tariffs. With Colorado ranking 5th in the nation for beef exports and beef being a top driver of the state's agricultural economy, these tariffs could have a significant impact on the industry. Other commodities such as dairy, wheat, and corn also rely on export markets to do business.

In a statement, Governor Polis emphasized the importance of supporting facilities like Federally Qualified Health Centers and making medication more accessible and affordable.

Overall, Governor Polis's visit to Southern Colorado was focused on promoting a better future for the state's youth, environment, wildlife, agriculture industry, and healthcare system. With these new laws in place, it is clear that Colorado is taking steps towards progress and prosperity for all its residents.
