Governor Polis Selects Two Colorado Students to Be “Governor for a Day”

DENVER ~ Denver - In a press conference today, Governor Jared Polis announced the winners of the highly anticipated "Governor for a Day" contest. The competition, which invited seventh and eighth graders from across the state to submit videos showcasing their leadership skills and vision for Colorado, received an overwhelming response.

"I was truly blown away by the inspirational videos that these young Coloradans created," Governor Polis shared. "Their passion and enthusiasm for our state and their desire to make a positive impact were evident in every submission. It was a tough decision, but I couldn't choose just one winner, so I have selected both a girl and a boy to join me as Governor for a Day."

The 2026 Governors for a Day are Angelique Tolbert and Weston Hancock. Angelique, an eighth grader from Sky Vista Middle School in Aurora, stood out for her creative video and unique perspective on leadership. In her submission, she highlighted qualities that she would bring to the table as Governor for a Day and emphasized her community-minded approach. Angelique is actively involved in various extracurricular activities at school, including student council, drama club, leadership class, and National Junior Honor Society.

Weston, an eighth grader from Ridgeline Middle School in Windsor, impressed the judges with his passion and knowledge of Colorado. In his video submission, he showcased his deep understanding of the state's outdoor landscape and its history. Weston is also involved in Mock Congress and speech and debate competitions at school.

Governor Polis expressed his excitement about working with Angelique and Weston during their respective days as "Governor." "With over 150 submissions, choosing just two winners was no easy task," he said. "But Angelique and Weston stood out with their enthusiasm, understanding of state government, creativity, and drive to make Colorado a better place."

While only two students can hold the title of "Governor for a Day," Governor Polis was impressed by all the submissions and their potential to shape Colorado's future. As a result, he has decided to call four other inspiring students as runners-up and offer to visit their schools. "Coloradans of all ages have big ideas about how to make our state stronger," Governor Polis stated. "I am excited to share with them what it's like being the Governor of the best state to live, work, and play."

The dates for Angelique and Weston's administrations will be announced soon, likely in October. The submissions for the contest showcased a wide range of talents, from creative videos to a deep understanding of state government and its complex issues.
