~ Starting on Monday, January 19th, motorists traveling on 8th Street will need to prepare for lane closures in both directions. According to the Colorado Springs Department of Transportation, these closures will last for approximately four weeks and will affect the stretch of 8th Street from U.S. Highway 24 to Motor City Drive.
The closure will begin with the northbound right lane of 8th Street closing at 9 a.m. This closure will span from approximately 400 feet south of the Fountain Creek bridge to the eastbound Highway 24 frontage road. The reason for this closure is so that crews can rebuild sidewalks, driveways, and other roadway features.
Once this phase is complete, the northbound turn lane to the eastbound Highway 24 frontage road will reopen. In the meantime, eastbound traffic from 8th Street will be detoured one block north to US Highway 24. However, the westbound frontage road from Highway 24 to southbound 8th Street will remain open during this work.

In addition to these closures, there will also be short duration lane closures on southbound 8th Street from Highway 24 to Bear Creek. This is necessary for crews to locate utilities under the street. These lane closures are expected to move along southbound throughout the day as work progresses and may last several days.
Once work on the southbound side is complete, crews will then move on to northbound 8th Street from Motor City Drive to Highway 24. Temporary lane closures can be expected over several days as they locate utilities in this area as well.
Despite these closures, access to local businesses along this stretch of road will remain open and clearly marked with signage for easy access. However, minor slowdowns may occur during peak travel times and motorists are encouraged not to block business driveways during this time.
For more information on this project and any updates on construction, individuals can visit coloradosprings.gov/8thstreet and sign up for email or text alerts. The Colorado Springs Department of Transportation advises motorists to plan ahead and find alternate routes if possible to avoid any delays during this four-week period.
