Colorado Springs: Arrest Made in South Nevada Homicide

~ Colorado Springs, CO - On the morning of May 23, 2024, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a call regarding a shooting on South Nevada Avenue near the southbound off-ramp from I-25. Upon arrival at approximately 6:04 a.m., officers discovered a male victim with at least one gunshot wound. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy on May 24, identifying the deceased as 45-year-old Darryl Edward Scurry Jr. While the cause and manner of death are still being determined by the coroner's office, CSPD is treating this as a homicide.

After months of investigation, an arrest warrant was issued on October 10, 2024 for 22-year-old Vonrobert Kennedy in connection with Mr. Scurry's murder. Kennedy was already in custody at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on unrelated charges.

This tragic incident marks the 20th homicide in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year, there were only 11 homicides reported.
