~ New York City – In a bipartisan effort to improve education and workforce development, Governor Kathy Hochul welcomed National Governors Association (NGA) Chair Colorado Governor Jared Polis for the latest in a series of events. The event, held in New York City, was part of Polis' NGA Chair's Initiative, Let's Get Ready: Educating All Americans for Success.
Joining the discussion were Education Secretary Linda McMahon and other education experts, including American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and Geoffrey Canada, President and co-founder of Harlem Children's Zone. Governors from Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island also participated in person while NGA Vice Chair Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt and Delaware Governor Matt Meyer joined virtually.
The event featured discussions with bipartisan education and workforce development experts. Earlier in the day, Governors highlighted the impact of Governor Hochul's Back to Basics reading plan during a visit to The Magnet School of Inquiry and Expression (P.S. 189M).
Governor Polis emphasized the importance of this moment for education, stating that through Let's Get Ready!, Governors are highlighting successful education models. He believes that by adapting these proven models, innovative ways can be identified to redesign and strengthen the nation's education system. "Governors and states are the largest funders of education," he said. "We are in a strong position to demand better results and outcomes for kids."
