DENVER ~ In Denver today, Governor Jared Polis praised the efforts of legislators in addressing the budget deficit caused by President Trump and Congressional Republicans' bill, H.R. 1. The bill, which was supported by Congressman Evans, Congressman Hurd, Congresswoman Boebert, and Congressman Crank, resulted in a significant reduction of federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a program that helps families afford food.
Governor Polis signed two bills during the special legislative session to address this issue. The first bill, SB25B-003 - Healthy School Meals For All, was sponsored by Senators Dafna Michaelson Jenet and Katie Wallace and Representatives Lorena Garcia and Katie Stewart. This bill updates a pending ballot initiative that aims to protect food access for Colorado families.
Speaking about the bill, Governor Polis stated that Colorado is committed to expanding access to healthy food rather than taking it away. He also expressed his gratitude towards the bill sponsors and advocates for their hard work in ensuring that all Coloradans have access to nutritious meals.

The second bill signed by Governor Polis was SB25B-002 - State-Only Funding for Certain Entities. This legislation, sponsored by Senators Jeff Bridges and Lindsey Daugherty and Representatives Jennifer Bacon and Jenny Wilford, ensures that Medicaid recipients can continue receiving healthcare services from providers like Planned Parenthood despite the impact of H.R. 1.
Governor Polis emphasized that H.R. 1 will deny millions of Americans access to healthcare and threaten thousands of Coloradans' access to primary care services such as wellness visits, breast cancer screenings, and preventative care. He commended Colorado for taking action to prevent this from happening.
The governor also acknowledged the hard work of the bill sponsors and advocates who worked tirelessly to pass these laws. He stated that while Congressional Republicans may be undermining healthcare providers, Colorado will continue to prioritize maintaining and expanding access to care.
In conclusion, Governor Polis applauded the legislators for their partnership and dedication in supporting Colorado families during this challenging time. He expressed his appreciation for their efforts in passing these bills and giving Colorado voters the opportunity to make their voices heard on these important issues.
