AURORA ~ AURORA - In a move towards a more sustainable future, Governor Polis has signed an Executive Order aimed at advancing state sustainability goals and promoting environmentally-friendly practices within the government of Colorado.
The governor expressed pride in Colorado's national leadership in developing clean energy solutions that not only save money for its citizens but also protect the environment. With this Executive Order, the state government is taking a step further by setting higher standards for itself and leading by example in the fight against climate change. This initiative builds upon previous plans and sets ambitious goals for reducing emissions, increasing energy and water efficiency, promoting electric vehicles, and cutting energy costs for taxpayers.
Governor Polis emphasized the importance of efficient government practices in both saving money for taxpayers and protecting the state for future generations. The Polis Administration has been at the forefront of combating climate change through investments in clean energy technology, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and preserving natural resources and public lands.

The Executive Order outlines specific priorities for creating a greener and more efficient government. These include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in State Operations by FY 2034 compared to the FY 2019 baseline, decreasing emissions by 32% in the State Fleet by FY 2034, reducing energy use per square foot in State Facilities by 20% by FY 2034, and cutting potable water consumption across agencies by 20% by FY 2034 compared to the FY 2015 baseline.
In addition to these goals, the Executive Order also directs state agencies to take concrete steps towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This includes assessing and improving energy and water usage in government facilities, as well as transitioning to electric vehicles and lawn maintenance equipment. These actions will not only reduce waste and lower emissions but also make more efficient use of state resources.
This Executive Order is part of a series of initiatives taken by Governor Polis to address environmental concerns. Previous Executive Orders have focused on reducing air pollutants, strengthening the Office of Sustainability, and implementing water conservation strategies within the state.
