The Executive Order outlines specific priorities for creating a greener and more efficient government. These include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in State Operations by FY 2034 compared to the FY 2019 baseline, decreasing emissions by 32% in the State Fleet by FY 2034, reducing energy use per square foot in State Facilities by 20% by FY 2034, and cutting potable water consumption across agencies by 20% by FY 2034 compared to the FY 2015 baseline.
In addition to these goals, the Executive Order also directs state agencies to take concrete steps towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This includes assessing and improving energy and water usage in government facilities, as well as transitioning to electric vehicles and lawn maintenance equipment. These actions will not only reduce waste and lower emissions but also make more efficient use of state resources.
This Executive Order is part of a series of initiatives taken by Governor Polis to address environmental concerns. Previous Executive Orders have focused on reducing air pollutants, strengthening the Office of Sustainability, and implementing water conservation strategies within the state.
With this latest Executive Order, Governor Polis and the state of Colorado are demonstrating their commitment to creating a more sustainable future for all. By setting ambitious goals and leading by example, they hope to inspire other states and countries to take similar actions in the fight against climate change.
