~ Colorado Springs, CO - On Saturday, Mayor Yemi Mobolade presented Connie Benavidez with the prestigious Spirit of Colorado Springs Award at the Conejos Neighborhood Reunion. The event, held at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, celebrated Benavidez's lifelong dedication to preserving and promoting Mexican folkloric dance in the community.
Known affectionately as "Grandma Connie," Benavidez has been a leader and cultural preservationist in Colorado Springs for over 30 years. Her passion for sharing the beauty of Mexican dance with the broader community led her to found Ballet Folklórico de la Raza. Under her leadership, the group has performed across the country, including at President Barack Obama's 2013 Inaugural Parade.
In his speech, Mayor Yemi praised Benavidez for creating a space where dancers of all ages and backgrounds could experience the dignity and beauty of Mexican folkloric dance. He also commended her for nurturing artists, mentoring leaders, and preserving culture through her work.

Benavidez's commitment to cultural accessibility is evident in her personal efforts to sew hundreds of traditional dresses for her dancers. Each dress represents one of Mexico's 31 states and is adorned with historically accurate embroidery, lace, and symbolism.
Her contributions have not gone unnoticed. As part of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum's Una Familia Grande exhibit, Benavidez's story is now permanently preserved as part of the city's cultural history.
The Spirit of Colorado Springs Award is given to individuals who embody the values of service, inspiration, and community leadership. Recipients are recognized for their transformative impact on the city and are presented with the award by Mayor Yemi or an official designee.
