Industry Study Finds Revenue and Retention Opportunities Across Jiu-Jitsu Schools

Gym management software leader Wodify published a study featuring data from 800,000 class check-ins to establish revenue, retention, and owner pay benchmarks for Jiu-Jitsu academies.

DENVER - ColoradoDesk -- Wodify released its free Jiu-Jitsu School Owners Benchmark Report, which examines revenue, retention, payroll, and owner pay trends at Jiu-Jitsu schools in the United States and Canada.

The report combines a survey of school owners with anonymized Wodify platform data covering nearly 800,000 class check-ins and more than 33,000 active students. It gives owners benchmarks for revenue, student counts, lead generation and conversion, revenue per member, class attendance, payroll and rent, profitability, and owner pay.

Key findings from Wodify's Jiu-Jitsu benchmarks:
  • Median revenue per member is $122 per month, compared with $164 at the 75th percentile, resulting in a median lifetime value of $2,318 per student.
  • Median member retention is 19 months, compared with 29 months at the 75th percentile, accounting for much of the lifetime-value gap.
  • Schools that spend 40% or more of revenue on payroll face profitability challenges across revenue levels.
  • Seventy-one percent of owners reported student-count growth this year, with a median increase of 85 students; the typical school has 110 members, compared with 185 among heavier technology users.
  • A typical owner earns $60,000 per year, or $29 per hour; owners with more than 200 students earn over $150,000 per year and more than $70 per hour.

Insights from the report also point out that while lead generation is always critical to a Jiu-Jitsu school's financial health, what matters most is conversion. Owners shouldn't assume that pushing the maximum number of leads into the top of their funnel will lead to success. Schools need an optimal number of leads based on the capacity they can handle, where they can convert more than 30% and retain those clients for years to come.

Owning a Jiu-Jitsu school is hard work, like any entrepreneurial brick-and-mortar business.

"I own a Jiu-Jitsu school, and I talk with hundreds of school owners every year. Most are making decisions on instinct because they haven't had industry benchmarks," said Ben Timm, VP of Revenue and Customer Experience at Wodify. "Lifetime value shows why those benchmarks matter. Many owners haven't calculated what the average student is worth to them. Once they do, decisions about pricing, retention, and where to spend the next dollar get easier."
