DENVER - ColoradoDesk -- Denver, CO — Colorado just recorded its worst snowpack in nearly 25 years at 61% of normal. To compensate for icy conditions, CDOT applied heavier-than-normal sand and gravel to Front Range roads all winter. That material is still on every major highway in the metro. Combined with a warm, wet spring forecast and an early hail season, Denver drivers are heading into the most dangerous stretch of the year for windshield damage.

WHY THIS WINTER MADE THINGS WORSE

When snowpack fails, roads get more gravel treatment. That sand sits on I-25, I-70, C-470, and E-470 until spring rains wash it away. During dry, windy warm-up periods it becomes a windshield-destroying projectile. Drivers who used the I-70 mountain corridor regularly this winter have almost certainly accumulated chips they have not noticed yet.

THE SPRING 2026 FORECAST
