~ Last week, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received the results of an extensive review of their training programs conducted by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). The review, which was contracted by CSPD in 2023, focused on training in use of force and defensive tactics, de-escalation techniques, procedural justice, and response to persons in crisis.
According to the report, officers expressed a desire for better training and more options when de-escalation tactics were ineffective. This includes training on alternative methods of gaining compliance before resorting to non-lethal tools such as pepper spray or tasers. In response to these findings, CSPD has committed to providing this additional training for its officers.
In a groundbreaking move, CSPD has also been selected by PERF to receive a $1.3 million grant for a three-year study on implementing Police-Focused Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training agency-wide. This makes CSPD the only law enforcement agency in the country chosen for this partnership. The focus of this training will still be on de-escalation techniques, but officers will now have better equipped skills for when physical intervention is necessary.
