~ Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) has recently announced the start of a significant renovation project at the Westside Community Center (WCC). The project aims to improve accessibility and enhance the guest experience at the community center.
According to Felicia Barnhart, WCC parks operations administrator, this renovation project is a crucial step towards creating a more inclusive and welcoming space for all. She stated, "By taking these steps, we are not only enhancing our facilities but expanding the opportunities available to everyone in our community."
In collaboration with the City's Office of Accessibility, the project includes several improvements to the main building. These enhancements will increase accessibility for program participants and visitors. They include a new entrance, a lift connecting the main floor to the lower level for restroom access, and modifications to inside ramps for ADA compliance.

The renovation project will also involve replacing the HVAC system and roofs on all three campus buildings. Additionally, air conditioning will be installed in the middle building and east cottages. To minimize disruption to community events, contractors plan to work around the existing WCC program schedule.
Funding for this project comes from $1.2 million allocated by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.
The Westside Community Center offers various programs and activities aimed at building a stronger and more connected neighborhood. In 2022, it began operating as a public-private partnership when the City of Colorado Springs took over management operations. This partnership allows for City staffing and funding while also providing revenue-generating opportunities through external partners and nonprofit organizations.
