DENVER ~ In response to the ongoing Poitrey Canyon Fire in Las Animas County, Governor Polis has declared a disaster emergency. The fire, which is currently estimated to have burned over 2,000 acres, prompted the verbal declaration from the governor today.
This declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) to take charge of all response, recovery, and mitigation efforts for the Poitrey Canyon Fire. This includes providing support through state and interagency engines and handcrews, DFPC and interagency aviation resources, as well as incident management personnel and overhead to assist with managing the fire and containment efforts.

Furthermore, DFPC is also offering administrative and financial oversight to Las Animas County and the incident. They are also providing intelligence products such as imaging, mapping, and fire behavior modeling to aid in managing the fire.
