AKCP, the world's oldest and largest supplier of networked wired and wireless sensor solutions, has launched a free online PUE calculator to check your data center efficiency and identify potential savings.
DENVER - ColoradoDesk -- Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is a popular metric that measures how efficient your data center operation is. It's a ratio of the amount of energy spent on cooling vs the amount of energy spent on the IT load. A PUE of 1.0 means your data center runs on totally free cooling. A PUE of 2.0 means you spend an equal amount of energy on cooling as you do on IT load.
A well-designed and run data center can obtain a PUE of 1.2 - 1.3. However, most smaller edge data centers and in-house computer rooms have PUE numbers of 2.0 and above.
If you already know your approximate power consumption, you can enter your total facility loads and IT loads into the AKCP online PUE calculator. By adding your cost per kWh you can get an estimated annual energy bill for your data center. The example below shows how much it costs to run a 20kW data center with a PUE of 2.0

IT load = 20kW
Total facility Load = 40kW
PUE = 40/20 = 2.0
With a cost of $0.15 per kWh it would equate to an annual electrical cost of $52,560.
Now let's see what happens if we can improve our PUE to 1.5
IT load = 20kW
Total facility Load = 30kW
PUE = 30/20 = 1.5
With a cost of $0.15 per kWh it would equate to an annual electrical cost of $39,420
That equals a $91,980 annual saving!
Not only do you save operational overhead, but you lower the carbon footprint of the data center, which can open the possibility of government rebates and grants from green energy initiatives.
But how do you go about making these savings and implementing the changes in your data center that are required? AKCP has a wide range of sensors for your data center including cabinet thermal maps and differential air pressure sensors. These sensors allow you to make changes in your data center and with AKCPro Server see real time the effect it has on your PUE. You can ensure that your data center is running at optimal condition, without violating ASHRAE recommended rack inlet temperatures and ∆T as well as ∆P values.
