DENVER ~ In a recent announcement, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) declared that it will not be utilizing contingency funding to guarantee food access for families and children who depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the ongoing shutdown of the Republican-controlled federal government. This decision was outlined in a memo released by the USDA, which also stated that states that choose to cover the cost of providing food for these families will not be reimbursed.
Governor Jared Polis of Colorado expressed his disappointment with the federal government's lack of urgency in addressing this issue. He stated, "Colorado is stepping up to provide access to healthy foods, ensuring families and children don't go hungry, while the Republican-controlled Congress fails to open up the federal government." The governor emphasized that Colorado values everyone and takes hunger seriously.

Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera echoed Governor Polis' sentiments, stating that hardworking families should not have to make difficult choices between paying for healthcare, prescription drugs, or food. She reaffirmed Colorado's commitment to ensuring that its residents do not go hungry while Congress neglects their needs.
In response to this dire situation, Governor Polis made an emergency request for $10 million from Colorado's Joint Budget Committee on Wednesday. This funding will be used to support local food banks and pantries in providing food for families who rely on SNAP. It is a crucial step in ensuring that these community resources can continue to serve those in need during this challenging time.
As the shutdown continues and families across the country struggle with food insecurity, it is heartening to see states like Colorado taking action to support their citizens. However, it is clear that more needs to be done at a federal level to address this pressing issue and prevent further harm to vulnerable communities.
