The Mayor's Spirit of Colorado Springs Award is given to individuals whose service and leadership align with the values of the city and have made a lasting impact on the community. Yonker's tireless efforts have not only transformed Springs Rescue Mission into a nationally recognized model for comprehensive homelessness services but have also extended beyond Colorado Springs through his involvement in various nonprofit organizations and partnerships supporting communities both nationally and globally.
Under Yonker's guidance, Springs Rescue Mission has grown from a single-site shelter into a 15-acre resource campus that provides shelter, addiction recovery programs, job training, and mental health services to hundreds of individuals each night. Even after his retirement, he has remained actively involved in the organization's work.
