• Lock every exterior door with its deadbolt, including the door between the garage and the house. That door is easy to forget and is often left on the knob lock only.
• Check that each deadbolt fully extends and turns without force. A bolt that only goes partway can be pushed back.
• Look at the strike plates. Short screws in the strike plate are a weak point; longer screws that reach the framing make a door much harder to force.
• Account for every spare key. Spare keys under mats, in planters or in fake rocks are the first places people look. Give a spare to a trusted neighbor instead.
• If you have a keypad lock, change any temporary codes given to contractors, cleaners or guests, and replace the batteries before you go.
• Lock gates, sheds and detached garages, and close and lock the overhead garage door.
• Take only the keys you need on the trip, and keep a spare car key at home or with someone you trust.

Households that have recently moved, or that are not sure who still has a copy of their keys, may want to have their locks rekeyed so that old keys no longer work.
