~ The City of Colorado Springs is making strides towards improving safety on Garden of the Gods Road, near Interstate 25. According to a press release, construction will begin on the east side of I-25 as early as Monday, Nov. 10.
The main focus of this project is to enhance center median and intersection safety. To achieve this goal, crews will be installing new traffic lights at Northpark Drive and Mark Dabling Boulevard. This will not only benefit drivers but also make the area safer for pedestrians.
The construction will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will temporarily reduce the usable lanes of eastbound Garden of the Gods by at least one lane. During rush hours, multiple lanes will remain open; however, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., drivers may encounter only one lane open in each direction. As a result, short delays are expected and drivers are advised to watch for signs and changing traffic patterns.

The second phase will involve temporary lane reductions on westbound lanes. The entire project is estimated to take about eight weeks to complete with work hours scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays only.
This project is crucial as this particular area has seen a high number of crashes in recent years. From 2015 to 2020, there were a total of 64 crashes at Northpark Drive, with 25 resulting in injuries. Similarly, there were 81 crashes at Mark Dabling Boulevard during the same time period, with 32 causing injuries and one resulting in death.
Funding for this $1.96 million project comes from the Colorado Department of Transportation, with additional support from the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority. For more information about this project, visit ColoradoSprings.gov/GOGmedians.
