Colorado Springs, Huntsville leaders unite around shared national security mission

~ Leaders from Colorado Springs and Huntsville, Alabama, said Monday they would seek opportunities to collaborate on national security and aerospace and defense industries, while continuing to compete for investment, jobs and missions.

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade and Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle Jr. joined Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC President and CEO Johnna Reeder Kleymeyer and regional leaders at a press conference at Davidson Technologies, near Redstone Arsenal.

The event took place on the second day of the chamber's Discovery Trip, which brought 90 business, government and community leaders from Colorado Springs to Huntsville to exchange ideas and build relationships, according to the press release.

The two cities have significant aerospace and defense sectors, and more than 70 companies in those industries operate in both regions, the release said. Leaders said the communities share an interest in supporting the nation's defense mission, service members and capabilities needed to address evolving security challenges.

"The threats facing our country are bigger than any competition between two cities," Mobolade said, adding that the trip offered a chance to strengthen relationships and identify ways to work together.

He said Colorado Springs would continue competing for investment, jobs, missions and opportunities, while pursuing collaboration where possible. Working together, he said, could create opportunities for local companies and workers and strengthen industries important to national security.
