~ Colorado Springs Fire Department and Vitalant Partner to Host Quarterly Blood Drives

The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) has announced a new partnership with Vitalant to host quarterly blood drives in an effort to save lives in the Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak Region. The first blood drive will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Fire Station 19, located at 2490 Research Parkway, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

CSFD is calling on the community to step up and donate blood, as all blood types are welcomed and encouraged. This initiative comes after the success of last year's first blood drive in October 2024, where 53 donors showed up and 56 units of blood were donated. This equates to saving the lives of 168 individuals.

In addition to hosting regular blood drives, CSFD has also implemented a groundbreaking program in partnership with UCHealth and the UCHealth Memorial Foundation. CSFD Medical lieutenants are now equipped with whole blood (type O) in their rigs, allowing them to administer life-saving blood transfusions in the field before patients even reach the hospital. Since its implementation, this program has saved the lives of over 58 patients with a survival rate of 60%. This is especially crucial for patients suffering from hemorrhagic shock, which is considered the leading cause of preventable death for individuals under the age of 46.

Not only does this program save lives, but it also reduces waste of blood products that would have otherwise expired at local hospitals' blood banks.

The following dates have been set aside for future blood drives: Feb. 26, May 7, Aug.11, and Nov.4. All drives will be held at Fire Station 19 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and appointments are required for donors. Community members can sign up through CSFD's social media platforms or by using the link provided.

CSFD and Vitalant are committed to making a positive impact in the community and urge individuals to join them in their efforts to save lives through blood donation.
