Colorado Springs: CSPD K9 Gravely Injured while taking Barricaded Suspect into Custody

~ On Wednesday morning, officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a call regarding a domestic violence protection order violation at a residence on Gorgeted Quail Grove. The incident occurred at approximately 10:43 a.m.

Upon arrival, the officers were met with a barricaded suspect inside the home. In order to safely resolve the situation, the Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU) and K9 personnel were called in for assistance.

As they entered the residence, K9 Roam and his handler, along with TEU officers, encountered the suspect. A confrontation ensued and during this time, K9 Roam was stabbed multiple times. The injured canine was immediately rushed to a nearby emergency veterinary facility where he is currently undergoing surgery and remains in critical condition.

Fortunately, no officers were harmed during the incident. The suspect was eventually subdued with the use of chemical irritants and a taser before being taken into custody.

Due to the severity of the attack on K9 Roam, the CSPD Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation into this attempted killing of a police service animal. The department is determined to bring justice for their brave four-legged officer who put his life on the line in service to his community.
