Colorado Springs: August and September events on Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain

~ As summer continues to heat up, Pikes Peak is preparing for a jam-packed schedule of events in August and September. From family-friendly activities to the 15th annual Broadmoor Cycle to the Summit, there is something for everyone to enjoy on America's Mountain.

On Thursday, August 1st, Pikes Peak will be celebrating National Mountain Climbing Day with a special sunrise opening. The Gateway will open at 4:30am and the last entry for this event will be at 6:30am. To guarantee a spot on the summit, visitors must purchase a timed entry permit per vehicle and admission fees in advance online. Limited admission sales will also be available at the Gateway, but access to the North Slope Recreation Area will not be provided. This event is weather permitting.

The following Saturday, August 10th, the Pikes Peak Highway will delay its opening until 9am due to the Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb presented by The Broadmoor and the Anschutz Foundation. However, the North Slope Recreation Area will operate as normal starting at 7:30am. For more information on this event, visit coloradospringssports.org/cycletothesummit/.

On Saturday, September 7th, Pikes Peak will host its annual fundraising event - the Pikes Peak Challenge. This event encourages registered participants to hike to the summit of Pikes Peak - America's Mountain. Survivors of brain injury, family members and community supporters will start their ascent at Barr Trail in Manitou Springs. For more information on this event, visit pikespeakchallenge.com. The Pikes Peak Highway will not be impacted by this event.

In honor of Patriot Day and National Day of Service Remembrance on Wednesday, September 11th, visitors can once again experience a sunrise on the Summit of Pikes Peak. The Gateway will open at 4:30am and the last entry for this special event will be at 6:30am. As with the previous sunrise opening, a timed entry permit per vehicle and admission fees must be purchased in advance online to guarantee a spot on the summit. Limited admission sales will also be available at the Gateway, but access to the North Slope Recreation Area will not be provided. This event is weather permitting.

Also on September 11th, the Manitou Incline will be closed from 6-9am for the 8th annual Firefighter Incline Climb, commemorating 9/11.

On Saturday, September 21st, Pikes Peak will host its annual Ascent race. The summit of Pikes Peak will be closed to highway visitors until 2pm, but guests can make reservations to drive to the summit for 2pm or later. The North Slope Recreation Area will open at 7:30am and the race will be live streamed on a jumbo screen at Memorial Park in Manitou Springs. Family and friends of runners are encouraged to watch the race from the park and celebrate with runners upon their return to Manitou Springs. For Pikes Peak summit reservations, visit DrivePikesPeak.com. The Manitou Incline will also be closed from 6-9am due to the race.

The following day, Sunday September 22nd, the Manitou Incline will be closed all day due to the Pikes Peak Marathon. However, Pikes Peak - America's Mountain will not be impacted by this event. For more information on this race, visit PikesPeakMarathon.org.

It's important to note that these events have received funding from Lodgers and Automobile Rental Tax (LART) for 2024. Administered by City Council with guidance from LART Citizen's Advisory Committee, LART provides funding to support special events that attract visitors to the Pikes Peak Region and provide economic and cultural benefits.

Finally, on Saturday, September 28th, Pikes Peak - America's Mountain will be hosting a volunteer cleanup day from 9am to noon. Volunteers can meet at the Gateway of the Pikes Peak Highway at 9am and will not be required to purchase an admission ticket. Trash pickers, gloves, and trash bags will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to wear bright or high-visibility colored clothing and dress in layers as the weather can change quickly at high elevations. It is also recommended to bring snacks and water for exposure to high elevation.
