Colorado Springs Airport Announces International Service to Cancun with Southwest Airlines

Trending...
~ Colorado Springs Airport (COS) has announced exciting news for travelers in the community. Starting June 7, 2025, Southwest Airlines will offer nonstop seasonal service to Cancun (CUN). This marks the first scheduled international route for COS and is a significant milestone for the airport.

Greg Phillips, Director of Aviation for COS, expressed his enthusiasm for this new development. "This is a huge win for our community and marks the beginning of a new chapter for COS with international service for the first time in our history," he said. With this addition, Colorado Springs will become Southwest's 25th international gateway city.

Mayor Yemi Mobolade also shared his excitement about the new route. "Today is a historic day for Colorado Springs as we take another step forward in expanding our city's reach and connecting our community to the world," he said. "This new route is more than just a travel option—it's a bridge connecting us to one of the most beautiful and culturally rich destinations in the world."

The direct link to Cancun opens up opportunities for travelers, whether it's for leisure or business purposes. Becky Kotara, Senior Manager of Network Planning at Southwest Airlines, highlighted the convenience this service will bring to Colorado Springs travelers. "Our new international service brings a faster journey for Colorado Springs travelers to reach Cancun's world-renowned resorts and beaches," she said.

The once-weekly service will run through the summer season and will utilize COS's newly constructed Federal Inspection Services Facility (FIS). The 14,000-square-foot facility was built earlier this year in anticipation of an airline providing international service. FIS facilities are crucial as they enhance security screening operations for handling international aircraft and passenger arrivals. All international flights must go through an FIS where passengers undergo U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) screening before entering the United States.

The project was partly funded by President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). COS received $6.4 million in grant money for the project, and no local tax dollars were used for this or any other purpose at the airport.

Travelers can now book their flights to Cancun on Southwest's website, Southwest.com. This new international service is a significant step forward for Colorado Springs Airport and will provide more options for travelers to connect with the world.
