DENVER ~ In Denver today, Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera took the lead in addressing the challenges of Long COVID by hosting a statewide convening in collaboration with the University of Colorado Anschutz. The event brought together individuals with lived experience, clinicians, researchers, state agencies, and community organizations to advance a shared understanding of Long COVID and other Infection-Associated Chronic Conditions (IACCs) in Colorado.

During her opening remarks, Lieutenant Governor Primavera emphasized the importance of a coordinated effort to address Long COVID. She stated that it affects people from all demographics and backgrounds and has significant impacts on physical health, mental health, and socio-economic wellbeing. Additionally, it places pressure on healthcare systems, public health systems, and social support systems.

According to data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), approximately 10.8% or 400,000 adults in Colorado have experienced symptoms for three months or longer after an acute COVID infection. This suggests that one in ten adults in Colorado has been affected by Long COVID. With many Americans still dealing with the long-term effects of COVID, it is crucial to address this issue.

The convening was a reflection of the Polis-Primavera administration's whole-of-state approach to healthcare. It brought together experts from various fields such as clinical care, public health, social services, disability services, education, and workforce systems to identify practical next steps for addressing Long COVID.

The day consisted of four panel discussions and research presentations that attracted lead clinicians, epidemiologists, and disability policy experts from communities across Colorado and the nation. These experts discussed the ongoing impact of Long COVID and proposed actions for improving care.

Dr. Sarah Jolley, Director of the ICU Recovery and Long COVID Clinic at CU Anschutz campus spoke on the closing panel about Colorado's future vision for Long COVID care. She highlighted the progress made in understanding this illness but also acknowledged that there is still much work to be done. With multiple clinical trials underway at CU Anschutz, the focus is now on identifying treatments that can make a meaningful difference for Long COVID patients.
