GRAND JUNCTION ~ Grand Junction, CO - Governor Jared Polis of Colorado celebrated the success of Colorado Mesa University's (CMU) geothermal heating system today. The system has been recognized by the Department of Energy as one of the top 19 case studies in the nation.
Governor Polis congratulated CMU for being featured as a case study for geothermal heating by the U.S. Department of Energy. The university's geothermal heat pump system is one of the largest in North America and currently connects 16 buildings on campus, providing 90% of the energy needed to operate them. Plans are in place to connect the remaining buildings, totaling 800,000 square feet, to achieve a fully geothermal campus.
The governor praised CMU's efforts as an example of Colorado's leadership in providing clean and cost-effective energy resources. He also highlighted his Heat Beneath Our Feet Initiative, which focuses on promoting innovative geothermal solutions. Earlier this year, Governor Polis announced $7.7 million in awards for 35 geothermal projects across the state.

CMU's gold-standard geothermal system covers 1.2 million square feet of building space and has saved the university $15.9 million in heating and cooling costs since its installation in 2008. Additionally, it reduces CMU's carbon footprint by nearly 18,000 metric tons of CO2 each year.
As chair of the Western Governor's Association, Governor Polis has been actively working towards advancing geothermal solutions. Most recently, he launched tax incentives through the Colorado Energy Office to increase geothermal electricity production.
The success of CMU's geothermal heating system serves as a testament to Colorado's commitment to clean and sustainable energy sources under Governor Polis' leadership.
