DENVER ~ Colorado Gov. Jared Polis urged residents in southwestern Colorado, particularly in Archuleta County and Pagosa Springs, to follow local evacuation orders as forecasts warned of potentially historic flooding.
The San Juan River is forecast to rise above historic flood levels and more than 6 feet higher than it did last weekend, according to the governor's office. The release warned that dangerous conditions could lead to significant road closures and make rescue operations more difficult.
"If you are in an evacuation zone, please follow instructions from local authorities and leave now. Do not wait for floodwaters to rise," Polis said. He urged residents to sign up for emergency alerts and check road conditions before evacuating.

Residents can find road closures and travel information at COtrip.org or through the COtrip Planner app. Closures along U.S. 160 were anticipated to begin at 2 p.m., with updates to be posted on COtrip, the release said.
People seeking shelter or temporary lodging information can call 2-1-1, text their ZIP code to 898-211 or visit 211 Colorado's disaster response page. Crisis Cleanup can be reached at 970-283-7325 to request volunteer cleanup assistance.
The governor's office advised people not to walk or drive through floodwaters or debris, or around barricades, and to return to evacuated areas only when local officials say it is safe. Residents can find flood safety guidance at Ready.gov/floods. For immediate emergencies, call 911.
