Investing in Students and Colorado’s Workforce: Governor Polis Signs New Laws Strengthening Schools and Helping Coloradans Access Skills and Good Jobs

DENVER ~ Denver - In a move to support students and strengthen Colorado schools, Governor Jared Polis signed several laws today. These laws aim to increase funding for students and streamline the process for Coloradans to acquire skills needed for in-demand, well-paying jobs.

One of the laws signed by Governor Polis is SB26-023, also known as the School Finance Act. This bill was sponsored by Representatives Meghan Lukens and Emily Sirota, and Senators Chris Kolker and Barbara Kirkmeyer. According to Governor Polis, this new law builds upon previous efforts to fully fund schools and implement a student-centered funding formula. He also highlighted that since taking office, per-student funding has increased by over $8,000. With this new law, funding will be increased by an additional $209 per student.

Governor Polis emphasized the importance of investing in students as they are the future of Colorado's economy, workforce, and overall prosperity. He thanked the sponsors for their hard work in getting this bill passed and for being dedicated partners in their efforts to better fund schools.

In addition to supporting students, Governor Polis also signed HB26-1317 - Unified Postsecondary Talent Development System. This bill was sponsored by Speaker Julie McCluskie, Representative Rick Taggart, and Senators Jeff Bridges and Lisa Frizell. The goal of this law is to create a one-stop-shop for Coloradans seeking job training, higher education opportunities, and work opportunities.

Prior to this law being passed, individuals had to navigate through a complicated web of seven state departments, more than 20 divisions, and 110 workforce initiatives. With the creation of a unified system, it will be easier for Coloradans to access resources that will help them acquire the skills needed for in-demand jobs. Governor Polis believes that simplifying these resources will benefit both workers and the economy.

Governor Polis also signed HB26-1353 - Student State Assessment in Social Studies, which was sponsored by Representatives Kyle Brown and Rick Taggart, and Senators Judy Amabile and Jeff Bridges. This law aims to streamline social studies assessments for students, ensuring that they have a strong understanding of history and civic responsibilities. Governor Polis noted that this will not only prepare students to be engaged citizens but also save the state money during a difficult budget year.

In addition to these laws, Governor Polis also signed SB26-145 - Charter School Involvement in Local Ballot Questions, sponsored by Senators Scott Bright and Cathy Kipp, and Representatives Andrew Boesenecker and Lindsay Gilchrist. This law allows charter schools to participate in local ballot questions related to funding.

Lastly, Governor Polis signed HB26-1004 - Continuation of Child Care Contribution Tax Credit. This bill was sponsored by Speaker of the House Julie McCluskie and House Minority Leader Jarvis Caldwell, as well as Senate President James Coleman and Senate Minority Leader Cleave Simpson. The law aims to continue the child care contribution tax credit, which provides financial assistance to families with young children.

Governor Polis believes that these laws will have a positive impact on Colorado's education system and workforce. He thanked all the sponsors for their commitment to creating a better future for Coloradans.
