Large-scale mural project aims to celebrate creativity, connection, and community identity.
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. - ColoradoDesk -- CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Community members, local artists, and small businesses are coming together to support the creation of the Desert Jewel Mural, a city-approved public art project planned for downtown Castle Rock. The mural, which will be painted at 734 Wilcox St., is designed to celebrate connection, creativity, and the evolving spirit of the Castle Rock community. The Town of Castle Rock has already contributed $5,000 toward the project, with organizers now working to raise the remaining funds through a series of community fundraising events throughout the summer.
To launch fundraising efforts, Kat Pro Studio will host the Desert Jewel Fundraiser on Saturday, May 31, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Castle Rock. The free public event will feature local artists, pop-up vendors, flash tattoos by Ink Envie, food and drinks, community experiences, and opportunities to meet Colorado mural artist Robert Bell. Artists and photographers will also be selling original work throughout the event as the studio transforms into a creative gathering space focused on supporting the future mural project.

The Desert Jewel Mural is envisioned as more than public art. Organizers hope the installation will become a meaningful landmark reflecting the identity, growth, and shared connection of the Castle Rock community. The mural's design centers around wolves as symbolic figures representing unity, resilience, intuition, and collective strength. Inspired by Kat Chelko's personal experience working closely with wolves, the concept reflects the communication and connection found within a pack as a metaphor for community belonging and togetherness.
"At its core, this mural is about people," said Kat Chelko, founder of Kat Pro Studio and visionary behind the project. "We wanted to create something that feels deeply connected to Castle Rock — something residents can feel proud of and visitors will remember."
The mural will be created by Colorado artist Robert Bell, whose work explores identity, movement, nature, and human connection through layered mixed-media techniques and large-scale visual storytelling.
