CINCINNATI - ColoradoDesk -- Dr. Jay A. Johannigman, MD, FACS, was honored to serve as the invited guest lecturer for the John R. Border Memorial Lectureship at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.
Dr. Johannigman's presentation reflected on the enduring connection between trauma medicine, education, and service. Drawing from decades of experience in both military and civilian trauma care, he emphasized the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and preparedness in modern medicine.
"Events like this remind us why mentorship matters," said Dr. Johannigman. "Every generation of physicians builds upon the lessons of those who came before them. Our responsibility is not only to advance the science of medicine but to uphold its values of humanity, teamwork, and readiness."
Throughout his remarks, Dr. Johannigman highlighted the continued need for excellence in trauma systems and surgical leadership, as well as the value of fostering curiosity and compassion among the next generation of clinicians.

The John R. Border Memorial Lectureship honors the life and legacy of Dr. Border, a respected educator and physician remembered for his commitment to medical education and patient care.
Following the lecture, Dr. Johannigman expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with faculty, students, and professionals at the University at Buffalo.
"It was an honor to contribute to a program that celebrates the lifelong pursuit of knowledge and service," he said. "The spirit of learning and dedication at the Jacobs School reflects the best of academic medicine."
Dr. Johannigman served as Professor of Surgery at the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine and as a Trauma, Acute Care, and Critical Care Surgeon at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
