~ The Colorado Springs Police Department is set to receive new technology in the form of two mobile Speed Safety Camera (SSC) systems in October 2025. This new Automated Vehicle Identification System (AVIS) technology has a proven track record of improving roadway safety in other cities around the world.
According to the CSPD, their main goal is to improve traffic safety in the community by promoting voluntary compliance with laws and safe driving practices. This is achieved through a combination of education, communication, collaboration, and enforcement. The implementation of new technology is just one aspect of their overall traffic enforcement strategy.
The SSCs will be deployed in vehicles to areas where there are vulnerable roadway users, such as school zones, roads bordering municipal parks, neighborhoods, and construction zones. The deployment strategy prioritizes protecting children, with SSCs being deployed during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup times in school zones. Outside of these times, they will be used on roadways bordering municipal parks and neighborhoods. Enforcement in construction zones will also depend on need and location.

Before being deployed into the community for a 30-day warning period, CSPD will share additional information about the vehicles that will house the Speed Safety Camera AVIS systems. For more information about CSPD's AVIS program, interested individuals can visit their website at ColoradoSprings.gov/speed-safety-camera-program where updates about the cameras and programs will be regularly posted.
This announcement from CSPD is in compliance with C.R.S. §42-4-110.5 and City Code §10.1.115, which requires public notification of any implementation of a new AVIS system within the community. The department hopes that this new technology will contribute to making Colorado Springs roads safer for all community members.
