~ Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) has announced the appointment of Deputy Fire Marshal Kris Cooper as their new Fire Marshal. The promotion ceremony will take place on April 9, 2025, where Fire Marshal Cooper will be publicly sworn in. He was selected for the position after an extensive nationwide search and has taken over the role immediately following the retirement of former Fire Marshal Brett Lacey.
A native of Colorado Springs, Fire Marshal Cooper has been a member of CSFD since 1997 and has dedicated almost four decades to serving in the fire service. He began his career in 1988 and has held various positions within CSFD including Fire Inspector, Plans Examiner, Unit Supervisor, and Deputy Fire Marshal. Prior to joining CSFD, he also worked as a Firefighter and Fire Inspector in Summit County, Colorado.
With an impressive resume, Fire Marshal Cooper brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer program and holds a designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence as a Fire Marshal. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from the University of Phoenix.

Throughout his career, Fire Marshal Cooper has shown a strong commitment to community risk reduction efforts with a focus on enhancing community safety through the application of fire codes and standards. He has been actively involved with organizations such as the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) and currently serves as a technical committee member for National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1030 -Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner Professional Qualifications.
Fire Chief Randy Royal expressed his confidence in the selection of Kris Cooper as the new Fire Marshal for CSFD. "We are pleased to announce that former Deputy Fire Marshal Kris Cooper has been chosen to lead our Division of the Fire Marshal," said Chief Royal. "With almost 21 years of experience with our department, he brings not only knowledge but also passion for public safety and fire prevention. We are confident that he will continue to lead our division towards positive outcomes in the future."
The CSFD is looking forward to the leadership and expertise that Fire Marshal Cooper will bring to his new role. With his extensive experience and dedication to community safety, he is sure to make a positive impact on the department and the citizens they serve.
