AURORA ~ AURORA - In a move to expand economic mobility for Coloradans, Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera joined forces with AmeriCorps, Serve Colorado, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment yesterday to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This groundbreaking MOU has resulted in AmeriCorps teams being deployed to Colorado for the past three years to provide free tax preparation services in low-income communities.

During the signing ceremony, Lt. Governor Primavera expressed her excitement for the impact that AmeriCorps members have had on Colorado communities through their hands-on, community-based work. She specifically highlighted their efforts in providing free tax preparation services for low-income families, which helps them keep more of their hard-earned money. She thanked all AmeriCorps members for their dedication to positively impacting the lives of their neighbors.

Over 100 members of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) are currently completing their ten-month term of service in Colorado. During this time, they have provided assistance at food and clothing shelters, Habitat for Humanity projects, and free tax preparation services in Pueblo and Denver. This past tax season alone, they helped over 5,000 individuals receive nearly $9 million in tax refunds. Over the course of the three-year partnership between AmeriCorps and Colorado, Coloradans have received over $23 million back in their pockets thanks to the efforts of these dedicated members.

The collaboration between Colorado and AmeriCorps will continue as the state has committed to investing even more resources into expanding programs. This commitment aims to enhance member experiences and create pathways to support Coloradans through initiatives such as financial counseling, housing support, climate change mitigation, and expanded educational opportunities.

In addition to signing the MOU, Lt. Governor Primavera also delivered the keynote address at the National Civilian Community Corps Graduation (NCCC) ceremony. Serve Colorado, the state commission for AmeriCorps, has doubled the number of operational AmeriCorps programs in Colorado from 11 to 24 and continues to create career pathways for members engaging in service. This year, the Colorado legislature passed House Bill 24-1240, which exempts alumni who use their Segal Education Award in Colorado from paying state income tax.

The partnership between AmeriCorps and Colorado has proven to be a successful one, with tangible results in helping low-income families and individuals. With the continued support and investment from the state, this collaboration is set to make an even greater impact on economic mobility for Coloradans in the years to come.
