DENVER ~ Denver - In a move to improve public safety and strengthen the state's workforce, Governor Jared Polis signed new laws today. The Governor signed SB25-003, also known as the Semiautomatic Firearms & Rapid-Fire Devices bill, which was sponsored by Senators Tom Sullivan and Julie Gonzales, and Representatives Andrew Boesnecker and Meg Froelich. This bill aims to enhance gun safety education in Colorado.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Polis stated, "I am focused on improving public safety and making Colorado one of the top ten safest states in the country. This bill ensures that our Second Amendment rights are protected and that Coloradans can continue to purchase the gun of their choice for sport, hunting, self-defense, or home defense." He also added that this law is not a ban on any type of firearms.
The Governor emphasized the importance of proper gun safety education and training in promoting responsible gun ownership and contributing to public safety. He worked closely with sponsors, advocates, and Coloradans throughout the legislative session to improve the bill.
As passed, this bill requires lawful purchasers to complete a gun safety education course before being able to purchase a firearm starting in August 2026.

"These laws will ensure that our state is prepared to support victims of crimes and help Colorado youth in care sites get needed services to stay safe and healthy," said Governor Polis.
These new laws add to a series of measures signed by Governor Polis to improve public safety, including cracking down on auto theft and illegal guns, increasing funding for local law enforcement, community-led crime prevention efforts, safe storage, and emergency risk protection orders.
In addition to these laws, Governor Polis also signed HB25-1221 - Emily Griffith Associate of Applied Science Degree sponsored by Representatives Eliza Hamrick and Lori Garcia Sander, and Senators Jeff Bridges and Paul Lundeen. This new credential aims to connect more Coloradans with the skills needed for good-paying jobs.
