Colorado Springs: Public invited to attend or host a neighborhood gathering in final week of 1,000 Neighborhood Gatherings Initiative

~ Colorado Springs, CO - As the City's 1,000 Neighborhood Gatherings initiative nears its end, the City of Colorado Springs is encouraging residents to attend several public events in the last week of the campaign. With over 800 gatherings already registered, including one in each of the 77 neighborhoods in Colorado Springs, this community-wide campaign aims to combat social isolation and loneliness by promoting connections between neighbors. In addition to attending these events, residents also have the opportunity to host and register their own neighborhood gathering as part of the campaign.

On September 21st, NAMI Colorado Springs will be hosting a clean-up event along the Sand Creek Trail. The Youth Advisory Council invites residents to join them in picking up trash along the trail. The RISE Southeast office will serve as both the starting and ending location for this event and will provide participants with trash grabbers, bags, and gloves. Residents are encouraged to register for this clean-up and are advised to bring sun protection and comfortable walking shoes.

Also on September 21st, Westside Community Center and Organization of Westside Neighbors will be hosting WestFest, a community picnic at Westside Community Center located on W. Bijou St. The event will feature a picnic lunch with brats, hot dogs, coleslaw, and beans available for purchase at $8 per person or $5 for children under 12. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their favorite picnic desserts for a dessert potluck. Live music from Jeremiah Erikson, Donny Coram, and Black Rose Acoustic Society will provide entertainment throughout the day.

In celebration of International Sign Language Day on September 23rd, Deerfield Hills Community Center is hosting their first ever American Sign Language (ASL) story walk at Panorama Park on Fenton Rd. Participants can enjoy an ASL story hosted by Colorado School of the Blind and Deaf while taking a walk through the park and signing elements of the park.

On September 26th, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) will be hosting its 2024 Homecoming Tailgate and 1,000 Neighborhood Gathering. This free event invites UCCS students, alumni, and neighbors of the university to enjoy food and live entertainment at Parking Lot 580 on Austin Bluffs Pkwy. The tailgate will be followed by a men's soccer game at Mountain Lion Stadium and a bonfire at 9 p.m. in Parking Lot 580.

As the campaign comes to a close on September 28th, several neighborhood associations are hosting events throughout the city. The Middle Shooks Run Neighborhood Association is hosting their annual creek clean-up at the northwest corner of Williamette Street and Franklin Street. The association will provide equipment and directions for cleaning Shooks Run, as well as arrange for trash pickup.

Deerfield Hills Community Center is also hosting two events on this day. COS Walkability is organizing a Southeast Neighborhood Walking Parade at Deerfield Park from 10 a.m.-noon. This event includes a decoration contest, food trucks, music from DJ Macadoe, vendors, Hispanic Heritage Month activities, and more. At 11 a.m., Deerfield Hills Community Center will also be hosting an art club celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a free art experience from Colorado College Mobile Arts.

Thrive Network is hosting the Southeast Block Party at Mission Trace Center business center on S. Academy Blvd on September 28th. This event will feature music, vendors, and lowriders for attendees to enjoy.

In the Flying Horse neighborhood on Piledriver Way, residents are invited to attend the 5th annual Oktoberfest celebration on September 28th. The event will include German food truck options, beer for adults to enjoy, games for kids to play, and even a bounce house.

With only one week left in the 1,000 Neighborhood Gatherings campaign, the City of Colorado Springs is encouraging residents to take advantage of these public events and connect with their neighbors. By promoting a sense of community and togetherness, this campaign hopes to combat social isolation and loneliness in the city.
