~ The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department (PRCS) has recently been awarded a $250,000 Non-Motorized Trails Grant to support improvements within Austin Bluffs Open Space. This grant was made possible through a partnership between multiple agencies, including Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), the Colorado Lottery, and the Federal Recreational Trails Program (RPT).

According to David Deitemeyer, the senior program administrator for Trails, Open Space and Parks, Austin Bluffs Open Space is a beloved landmark in the community known for its stunning views and unique geological features. He expressed gratitude for the support from Colorado Parks and Wildlife in making this project a reality. The investment will not only enhance access to the popular hiking destination but also help preserve the natural beauty of open spaces for future generations.

The grant will be used to construct approximately 2.5 miles of multi-use single-track trails in Austin Bluffs Open Space. This includes the development of a dedicated hiking trail called "Enlightenment Hiking-Only Trail," which will lead to the summit of Pulpit Rock. The trail will feature stone steps designed to promote sustainability, reduce maintenance costs, and improve the overall user experience.

In addition to creating new trails, this project also involves decommissioning and restoring around 4,100 linear feet of rogue and illegal trails to protect the ecosystem's integrity. The grant will also fund essential enhancements at two main parking lots in Austin Bluffs Open Space. These improvements aim to increase parking efficiency and convenience for visitors by installing curb and gutter systems. Informative trailhead kiosks will also be installed at both parking areas.

This project marks significant progress towards finalizing the 2018 Austin Bluffs Open Space Master Plan. The plan includes completing nearly 22 miles of sustainable open space trails, improving both south and north trailheads with gravel parking for 94 vehicles, and adding new kiosks and wayfinding signage. The remaining work to fully implement the master plan's recommendations involves drainage improvements in Pulpit Rock Creek.

The City of Colorado Springs PRCS Department is excited about the opportunities this grant will provide for enhancing Austin Bluffs Open Space. With the support of various agencies, this project will not only improve access and user experience but also ensure the preservation of this cherished landmark for years to come.
