DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In a show of respect and honor, Governor Jared Polis has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across the state of Colorado from sunrise on Friday, March 20, 2026 until sunset on Saturday, March 21, 2026. This order is in remembrance of Staff Sergeant Benjamin Pennington who tragically lost his life during Operation Epic Fury.
Sergeant Pennington was a member of the 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado. He was killed while bravely serving his country.
To pay tribute to Sergeant Pennington's sacrifice and service, a public procession will be held in his honor on Friday, March 20th in Fort Knox, Kentucky. A memorial service will also take place on Saturday, March 21st.

Governor Polis expressed his condolences and gratitude for Sergeant Pennington's dedication to protecting our nation. "Colorado stands with Staff Sergeant Pennington's loved ones as we honor his life and service," said Governor Polis. "We are forever indebted to those who selflessly serve our country in uniform and today we mourn the loss of Staff Sergeant Pennington while also expressing our deep appreciation for his bravery."
The decision to lower flags was made by Governor Polis upon hearing the news of Staff Sergeant Pennington's death. It serves as a symbol of respect and gratitude for his sacrifice and commitment to defending our freedom.
